Duck again

A long time ago, we went to What The Duck in Georgetown. They have opened a branch in Bayan Lepas, at SPICE, since late last year if not mistaken. We visited it when my father was here, and here's what we had:

duck confit - RM24.50 for set lunch
This is the dish that I was going to this restaurant for.
By the way the sauce is longan sauce...something that I didn't mention in my previous post. I recalled it when I saw the piece of longan in the mini sauce jug.

I took a photo from the opposite angle as well. See the roundish thing that is the longan?

Dallas BBQ duck - RM24.50 for set lunch
My brother's choice. He had had it before and liked it. I personally don't like it so much because of the BBQ sauce which is poured on top of the duck... I would prefer a dry BBQ!

duck confit spaghetti - RM19.80 for set lunch
This is supposed to be spicy (with chilli flakes, I expect), but my father had been coughing a lot, so we requested for the dish to be non-spicy.

The set lunches came with a drink and an appetizer. The à-la-carte price was a few ringgit less than the set lunch price. For the appetizer, we could choose between duck confit salad or soup of the day.

duck confit salad

soup of the day
We weren't told what soup it was, but it semeed to have pieces of corn in it.
On top of the set lunch price, there is a 10% service charge.

The monster Totoro

Lately there has been a craze over virtual runs. The first time I heard the term "virtual run", I thought about virtual reality. It seemed like it was something like running in virtual reality...so we don't have to physically run? lol

But it turned out to be a challenge where you just run whenever and wherever you want, and the challenge is completed as long as you just make up the total amount of distance in the allotted time. A medal and other items are given to those who complete the challenge, similar to a marathon.

To make people interested to join, organizers come up with different themes to have prizes that are unique and appealing. There was a Totoro run where the prizes were a medal and a Totoro t-shirt. When my friends were recruiting on Facebook (I think there is a group fee that is cheaper), one of them said that they didn't want the t-shirt. I told him that he could give it to me if he didn't want it (no way I was going to take the challenge, even though I like Totoro).

And lo and behold, I am now the proud owner of a Totoro t-shirt. :D (It was a surprise gift after the run ended and that group of friends had received their prizes)

What's more, the back of the shirt announces its wearer as a 21km-finisher. I have never finished a 21km-run in my life...

When I got home, I told my father, “My friend gave me a t-shirt.” As I took the shirt out, he said, “Nice colour.” But when I showed him the front of the shirt, he exclaimed, “What’s that? Not nice, not nice. So ‘hiong’ (translated as fierce or scary)”

Hahaha... I guess Totoro is a monster after all...

Good idea, but so bad at details

I watched Voice, a Korean drama about a woman who has very acute hearing. It's a crime thriller, with a serial killer on the loose and two cops, who had each lost a family member to the serial killer, trying to hunt him down.

However, the drama was a lot less enjoyable than it could be, because of HUGE GAPING errors in the plot! I wrote my complaints down as I watched, and I was surprised myself to find EIGHT complaints after the drama ended, six of which were from the last two episodes (probably because in earlier episodes, some gaps still had a chance to be filled in later).

Anyway, here goes:

ONE:
This girl is talking to her sister on the phone and then she gets kidnapped. The sister (a police officer no less) calls the emergency number to report the kidnapping. Even after the sister says that the girl was on the phone when she got kidnapped, the responder at the call centre asks, "Does she have her phone on her?" (this one I can accept, because it could be a routine question) And the sister replies something along the lines of "maybe". Then the responder types on the report, "Speculated to have her phone on her."

You just spoke on the phone with her!!!!! Idiot! Not one, but two idiots!

TWO:
The lead character is a hot-headed detective who likes to get all worked up and punch the criminals he catches. Sometimes his colleagues will hold him back, like when he pulls out a gun and wants to shoot a criminal. But somehow when no one is there to hold him back, he manages to stop himself very well, like hitting something else, dropping his weapon, or shooting to the side.

If it happens once or twice it might be okay, but when every single criminal is made to be the worst ever and needs additional punching, it gets really old to watch...

THREE:
This guy is getting blackmailed into being a mole for hiding the fact that his father caused a hit-and-run, and that he killed someone by accident when that person tried to call the police to report the hit-and-run. If he's being blackmailed, it means that very few people know about the incident. But somehow when they suspect him of being a mole and want to do some research on him, they seem to uncover these incidents fairly easily.

FOUR:
And this one is not just happening in this drama, but in several others as well... Why do these blackmailed people, when they start regretting their actions, always tend to go and tell their blackmailer that they intend to go to the police? That is a sure way to either get blackmailed worse, or get killed. Idiots...

FIVE:
They find the criminal's hideout, and they know from the blueprint that there is a basement with a window where they suspect he kills his victims. When they reach, they find the criminal's car there, and fresh blood trails indicating that he has just brought a new victim. BUT, when they enter, they look everywhere without going to the basement, and then they ask each other, "Why isn't he here?" Stupid cops!!!

SIX:
It gets more and more ridiculous... the criminal's (rich) father is desperate and asks someone to help cover up his son's crime. He says, "What if we say he (his son) is dead?" He says, "I've seen people do it. When they don't want to send their son to the army. They kill the neighbour's son, then switch the boys and send him to the army." Huh?? Then you are sending your son to the army anyway...

This may be a translation error since I was reading subtitles...though I can't figure out what can be translated wrongly to this.

SEVEN:
When the criminal faked a suicide in the hospital, they said it was not possible and rushed out looking for him without even checking the dead body. (so smart all of a sudden, eh?) Then when they were chasing the criminal again at a port, someone falls into the water and everyone spends their effort on finding the person in the water rather than continuing to look for the criminal. A LOT of people at that.

Earlier you said he wouldn't commit suicide, what makes you think he will now? -_-

What's more, they saw him get out of his car with his driver, which makes two people. AND when they started looking for the body, someone said, "It might not be him." So WHY did so many police officers stand around waiting for the body to be fished out, instead of looking for the second person?!

EIGHT:
Then they set a trap with the girl luring the criminal out. But instead of catching the criminal right away, they let him drag the girl up to the rooftop and even get the chance to aim a stab at her once (which missed, of course) before the guy shows himself with a gun. WHAT?! You were so sure he wouldn't kill or at least injure her on the spot before even dragging her to the rooftop? He should have been apprehended immediately upon stepping up to the girl!

Not to mention why they didn't get more backup to protect the girl who was being the bait...

Seriously, too many plot points were badly planned out. It is so bad that I wouldn't rate this more than 5/10 even though I actually liked the basic plot. (I might even rate it less than that, but let's face it, I don't do ratings because I might want to change the rating later :P )

Scented service

I walked into this perfume shop just to see whether there was anything suitable as a gift. Once I approached the shop, the saleslady (she was the only person there) came towards me and gave me a paper scented with one of the perfumes. She proceeded to ask me whether it was my first time visiting the shop, asked me what kind of scent I preferred ("sweet" or another qualifier which I can't remember), and sprayed a few of the scents for me.

Actually I had been immediately put off by the prices (not to say that they're super-expensive but I just tend to go for cheaper stuff :P ), and was hoping she would leave me alone to have a quick look and then leave. But the scents were actually quite good. They also have lotions and shower creams, and she applied one of the lotions on my hand. It smelled really nice after that!

Initially I thought all the scented papers that she gave me were the same, and I couldn't even recall the names of the scents. It wasn't until I left the shop and was putting the papers into my bag that I noticed that each paper had the name of the scent on it. No wonder she followed me around and sprayed each scent for me...I wasn't supposed to pick the wrong pieces of paper!
