Who's the winner? WiFi-wise, it's KLIA! ;)

When we were waiting for our flight at CDG (Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris) we tried to use the WiFi connection, but couldn't 'cos we have to pay for it (and we're too stingy for that lol) And now I'm here in KLIA waiting for my connecting flight to Kuantan, and there's free WiFi! :D

I guess the KLIA people know that Malaysians won't pay for WiFi :P

And well, while I'm at it, I'll write this as well: Cuti-cuti Malaysia! :D I'll be here till mid-September ;)

INSA bowling championship

Last Friday, after our final final test (no, no mistake with the two "final"s ;) ) we had a competition for some of the 2nd-years. We had had to build a machine for one of our subjects, and some groups (like mine) built a bowling machine. It wasn't classic bowling, of course; it was actually a pétanque ball that we were to shoot at, um, pipes :P (you'll see in the photos)

We had to come up with a design, and then actually build the whole machine from scratch (working as a team, of course) My group built 2 machines, this one, which I essentially worked on:
and this one, which is almost undeniably the most spectacular machine in the competition, 'cos it's a pretty unique idea
but unfortunately the chain came off...and here they are trying to repair it...
They didn't manage to put the chain back on, so in the end they had to settle for an alternate solution (sorry, I have no idea how to write it here without going into too much detail)

Yesterday I went out of my way to go to a shop (which, by the way, was closed, wasting my time) and I crossed this:

In Angoulême there are a lot of painted walls (or murs peints as they call it, it means exactly the same thing but somehow it sounds better lol) and we see them quite often. I found out pretty early that Lyon had a lot of them as well, but somehow we don't come across them so often. Maybe it's because Lyon's too big... Anyway, I don't come along this road often so I've seen it before but forgotten about it :P

Please note that there is a part of the wall jutting out, and it is painted as a pile of boxes/crates being pushed by a man!

I'm not sure which photo is nicer, or gives a better optical illusion... I think I should have taken a photo from further away, so that the building on which it's painted isn't seen so clearly. But I thought that it would turn out too small on the photo...too bad, I'll have to remember to try it next time.

Along another road, I passed a florist and noticed that there was "hibiscus" on its "flowers of the day" chalkboard outside its door. So I looked around for the hibiscus, but didn't see any (I didn't want to go into the shop since I wasn't going to buy anything) But what I did see was this:

I wonder whether they're considered seasonal flowers around here...maybe they're sold just to put in a house as decoration and thrown away in winter when they droop? (I'm supposing that they will droop...but then I don't really know!)

Anyway...today I made pain perdu (French French toast, so to speak :P) Whenever I buy a baguette (the famous French loaf) I will surely have some left over because it's so long, and that it loses it's fluffiness very quickly (before the next day) So instead of forcing myself to eat half-stale bread the next day, I freeze it to make French toast another day. (I've learnt that you should either freeze it or cut it up before it gets too hard, 'cos once it's rock-hard there is no way you can cut it into nice slices) When there's too much for breakfast, I'll usually heat the rest up in the microwave for lunch (or just do brunch :P), but today somehow I didn't feel like eating plain French toast again, so I did a little "improvising" (if you can call it that)...and ta-dah!

(For the curious: I added a prawn, a bit of olive oil and parsley on each toast.)

It wasn't bad...but it was a little weird... maybe plain bread would be better :P

Search for a song...it ain't easy!

I heard a song on Virgin Radio earlier, and I just couldn't recall the name of the song. I knew I had heard it several times before (in Malaysia), , but I just couldn't recall what it was called. So I did what I usually do when I'm online and I want to know a song's name: I typed in the lyrics I heard and did a Google search. But it was harder than I thought...for the simple reason (yeah, it's simple, but I didn't know it until later, when I had found the lyrics) that I heard round and round instead of around and around, and also wrong and right instead of a wrong and a right! And I had the "brilliant" idea of searching for the whole phrase (with quotation marks), which I don't usually do. (I usually type out the words without bothering the order in which they come in)

I finally found it after trying several different searches (and taking off the quote marks) I knew that title, I think I had listened hard to catch it on the radio when I heard the song several years ago! (it's The Riddle, by the way) So after all that hard work (lol), I present you this lovely, catchy song that I haven't heard in ages! Hope you like it ;)


It seems that an Italian DJ (Gigi D'Agostino) made a remake of this song, I find that it sounds different (there's an accent?), but the video's not bad. I don't like Nik Kershaw's video very much...

How to solve a mid-life crisis?

When I was married 25 years, I took a look at my wife one day and said, "Honey, 25 years ago we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10-inch black and white TV but I got to sleep every night with a hot 25-year-old blond. Now we have a $500,000 home, a $45,000 car, a nice big bed and a plasma screen TV but I'm sleeping with a 50-year-old woman. It seems to me that you are not holding up your side of things."

My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 25-year-old blond and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car, sleeping on a sofa bed and watching a 10-inch black and white TV.

Aren't older women great? They really know how to solve your mid-life crisis.

Moth in the room

There is a moth in my room. It has 4 days to go out.

The last time I left for a few days (to go to Budapest), there was a moth in my room as well. I tried to shoo it out but it wouldn't go...so when I left I closed the window as usual...and when I came back it was dead. Totally its fault. Hope this one won't suffer the same fate. So get out! (lol like it reads my blog...)

No entry / Do not disturb sign

Yesterday a bunch of my INSA friends were online. But...

(the AAA comes up when it's an MSN user who has decided to use Chinese characters in his/her name...)

What's the point of being online if you put up a "do not disturb" sign all the time? This isn't the first time I've seen such an array of "no entry" signs...though it might be the most of them in a row!

The majority of my friends have this sign up very often. I wonder what they want it to convey...could it really be that they don't want people to disturb them? If that is so, why are they so often online?

I see it this way: When a "do not disturb" sign is put up, I won't disturb the person unless if it's important. But...how important is important? I'm not quite sure... Or I might just leave a message, and not push for a reply... (they're busy, right?) And as for me putting up the sign, I hardly ever do so...I only put it up when I feel that it will take a very long time before I reply...but you can still leave me messages and I'll get back to you! ;)

Curry review

In the past year (this school year in France, I mean, since it's ending in 2 days ;) ) I've tried 3 kinds of canned curry that I bought here, in an Asian mini market. (yes, they have Asian mini markets here!) Since I've been talking about putting up more pictures (and also because I have more free time now :P) I shall grace you with a photo of...the can! lol

Anyway, this is the one I just tried, as you can see, it's green curry. The other two that I tried were red curry (hehe, doesn't sound very interesting, huh?) and mussaman curry (don't ask me why it's called that...) The thing is, the red and green curries taste almost the same to me...only the colour is different! And another difference is, in the red curry there are pumpkin pieces, and in the green one there are bamboo shoots. Wondering what that is? I wondered too (but I think I've eaten bamboo shoots before, just...cut up differently?) Here's a photo with the bamboo shoots...

and as you can see, there are some red chillies as well. And some green veggie that I don't really know. And...drumroll, please... kaffir lime leaves (that's daun limau purut, isn't it?) I had to add the meat myself, but everything else was in the can...

The mussaman curry was more...Malaysian. It had potatoes in it, and it was almost like the chicken curry with potatoes that we usually find. I think that in future I shall buy that again...but maybe not the green or red curry. They're not bad, but just not as good.

But now I'm waiting for rendang :P (sigh...can't find that here...)

Just a little digression: Whenever I buy kiwis, they seem to take so long to be ripe! My mother told me once that to make kiwis ripen faster, we have to keep them with apples.(don't ask me why!) This time (for the first time, I think) I bought these 2 fruits at the same time, but I think of this now, when I just ate the last apple yesterday...talk about irony!

-ise vs -ize

In my search for an answer to the musn't/mustn't problem, a friend pointed me to the AskOxford site, where I stumbled across this:

British spelling has always recognized the existence of variant spellings using the suffix -ize/-ise. When American spelling was standardized during the 19th century (mainly through the efforts of the great American lexicographer Noah Webster), the consistent use of -ize was one of the conventions that became established. However, since then, the -ise spellings have become more popular in Britain (and in other English-speaking countries such as Australia), perhaps partly as a reaction against the American custom. Spellings such as organisation would have struck many older British writers as rather French-looking. The Oxford English Dictionary favoured -ize, partly on the linguistic basis that the suffix derives from the Greek suffix -izo, and this was also the style of Encyclopaedia Britannica (even before it was American-owned) and formerly of the Times newspaper.

The main advantage of the modern -ise habit? Lazy spellers do not have to remember that there are several important words which cannot properly be spelt with -ize. These include words which are not formed by the addition of the -ize prefix to a stem, but by some other root which happens to end in the same syllable, such as -vise (as in televise), -cise (as in incise), and -prise (as in comprise).

The American system resulted in the creeping of z into some other words where it did not originally belong. Writers of American English should be aware of some spellings that are regarded as incorrect in the UK, notably analyze.

Now that's interesting...I always thought that -ize wasn't accepted in British English.

Back to my original problem, it seems that mustn't is right and musn't is wrong (according to Oxford...) but I'm not satisfied...there must be a reason why I learnt musn't in school...and why I didn't even see mustn't being used until a few months ago... (and not to mention why Enid Blyton uses musn't! ;) ) I'm seriously considering sending a letter to AskOxford! (they don't have an e-mail address...I guess it's to deter people who aren't that serious about their questions...)

Which thumb is on top?

I did a little test (to analyse the brain) yesterday, and one of the questions was to see which thumb is on top when you clasp your hands. I never thought of it, but I just realised that I will always clasp my hands the same way, and if I change it, it just feels weird... Try it and see! This is the scientific explanation that they gave me:

You said your left thumb is on top. This suggests the right side of your brain is dominant.
The left side of your brain is said to be more adept at language, logic and linear thinking.
The right side of your brain is said to control your visual, spatial and intuitive processes.

It's a little weird though...since I'm right-handed I would have thought that my left brain would be dominant...

Plans for the holidays

In one week I will have finished my exams. And less than a week later, I'll be back in Malaysia.

So what am I planning to do? I already have a few things in mind...and seeing the kind of things these are...I don't think I'll be bored these hols.

1) Read, read, read! I've already started...and I borrowed an Agatha Christie book from the INSA library when I went there last Tuesday, ready to read once my exams are over! (or maybe even before...since the last 3 subjects don't really need studying for...they're kind this year, not leaving Maths or Physics till the end :D ) Then I have several e-books that I've downloaded but haven't read yet...and several sites online where I can download some more! Not to mention RD.com that I found recently... So, as you can see, the only limit is time...and my eyes :/

2) I bought a knitting kit six months ago. SIX months, and I haven't even started. It was the first of a teach-yourself-to-knit series...at a discounted price (I think it cost 50 cents or 1 euro) So that's one of the things I will be doing this hols.

3) Minesweeper. Of course I'm gonna play minesweeper! But I think the priority will go to reading. I'll try to play a few times a week...to stay in the Active Ranking (and not lose my touch!). Mainly, I want a record, but I don't think intensive playing will get me there faster...

4) Watch Spanish series on TV :P After a year of learning Spanish (2 hours a week) I find that I'm lagging (waaay behind) in the oral department. So it's time to polish that a bit (hope it works! lol) I shall also try to find some Spanish e-books, 'cos for the moment I have to think really hard before conjugating each verb! Hmm...anyone has any Spanish series to lend me? (I'd really like to see Paula Paulina again... :P )

The problem: almost all of this requires eye power :/ So what can I do that doesn't strain the eyes?

1) Sports, like table-tennis or badminton...but that's harder. Have to find somewhere, someone, etc...

2) Makan* :P We didn't manage the food tour of Kuantan last year...what about this year? lol

3) Maybe I can cook a bit...can try that crumble in a real oven... Besides, I think my mother might actually be glad to hand over her kitchen sometimes...the question is, can I find my way around? :P

And maybe I'll take more photos...and post on my blog! ;) And with all the reading I shall be doing, what about book reviews, you like book reviews? lol

I just thought of something actually... I'm not much of a photo-snapper. But then sometimes when I write about something, I go "oh, it would be nice to have a photo to put here..." But I can't do anything about it since what happened is already over...kinda a pity, I guess. But if I want to take photos when something is happening, that means I have to be already thinking about posting about it. That, on the other hand, is hard... So I guess I have to try taking photos more often? Hmm...people will think I'm weird, taking photos of everything :P

Il n'y a aucun risque de contagion immédiate mais pour la sauvegarde de tout le monastère, j'ordonne à tous les malades de mettre fin à leurs jours ou de quitter le monastère au plus vite. "
Les moines étant très fort en esprit logique parviennent à sauver le monastère de la grave maladie et tous les malades partent ou se suicident.
Mais après combien de jours ?
Compte tenu que "N" est le nombre de malades et qu'il n'y a dans le monastère aucun miroir ni aucun objet pouvant être utilisé de la sorte.

S'il n'y a qu'un seul moine malade, il ne voit que des moines sains toute la journée et en déduit qu'il est malade. Il se tue donc dans la soirée. S'il y a deux moines malades, chacun d'entre eux ne voit qu'un seul malade le premier jour, mais le lendemain matin il est toujours vivant. Ils en déduisent qu'ils sont malades tous les deux et se tuent dans la soirée. Et ainsi de suite, jours après jours. Les "N" malades se tuent au bout de "N" jours !

The first two tries were worse...mainly because I had to get a hang of how it worked. With these results I'm pretty average, with roughly 50% of test takers before and behind me.

After just a while, his friend threw back the paper for him, he unwrapped it and saw an eraser with A B C D written on each side of it, and words written on the paper: "throw it yourself"

A lizard was lost in front of a share market's office, and suddenly came a big crocodile. The lizard was in a panic, it quickly grabbed the crocodile's leg and cried "Mama!" The crocodile cried, "my poor son, you became so thin just being involved with the share market for half a month!"

Hehe, I guess that means that if we ever see a giant, we have to yell "Mama!" :P

Three weeks left :)

I have been posting a lot of links lately...but nothing of my own. Well, my excuse it that I've been rather busy...this week I have 4 evaluations. I just finished two of them: Mechanics and Spanish (yippee, last Spanish test of the year!! Hopefully I'll be able to improve it a little during the hols, when I have no other subjects to bother me...)

Tomorrow I will have my Physics practical evaluation, we have 6 different lab sessions to revise. But the good thing is that we can bring our notes (that we were supposed to do during our lab sessions) to help us. But we never have enough time to finish... Each lab session lasts 4 hours and for the evaluation we have 2 hours to do about the same things! (actually it's a little less, but at least two-thirds, I'd say...)

Friday I have a radio programme to hand up :P We have a project which is to make a radio programme, with interviews in it (we have to go out and interview someone outside INSA) It's done in groups of three, so after the lab evaluation we're going to concentrate on that...for the moment it's only half done.

Next week will be my so-called revision week, but it will be peppered with classes, a presentation of a computer game (another project, in groups of four this time), and a final test. (I did say it was a so-called revision week...) And the week after we'll have 5 tests, one a day. After that, I shall wait for my flight back to Malaysia on Wednesday :D (who's gonna come meet me at the airport? :P)

I've made several online purchases lately, but I haven't got them yet...
1) 2 cushions for my chairs
I've been wanting to buy them for some time now, but they're pretty expensive...and I didn't really need them. (I just felt that my chairs were a bit hard, wanted a bit of luxury :P) Then the other day they were on offer, so I decided to go ahead and buy them.
2) 7 DVDs
This is the first time I'm buying DVDs (unless if you count a magazine I bought for its free DVD) I hope they work! Same reason here, I bought them because they were cheap...some of them cost only 1€! My two prize catches are: Anthony Zimmer (I watched this movie when I was in Angoulême, it was great!) and Arsène Lupin (I didn't catch this film when it came out...'cos I went to Barcelona with the girls when the guys went to watch it!) Unfortunately both are in French only, without subtitles... I wanted to buy Les Choristes (the first French film I saw in France, rivalling Anthony Zimmer in greatness :P) when I saw that it was on offer as well, but it was more expensive...and I decided it wasn't worth it. I would have bought it if it were English-subtitled. So I guess I will be able to watch movies in the next two weeks...that'll be a good break from revision :)
3) a handphone
I saw an offer for a handphone online, a Nokia 6085 at 9€. Of course there's a catch, I have to sign up for that company's line for a year. But all in all, I think it's worth it... I will still keep my prepaid number to receive calls, and call out using that new number. That avoids the hassle of changing my phone number with everyone I know... Good thing my prepaid number's "safe" for 8 months after a recharge ;)

I took the TOEFL two weeks ago...and the results are out! I got 677 :D I think the results came out yesterday...I didn't know until I reached ping pong practice (in fact it wasn't really a practice...'cos it was the last session and we decided to transform it into a dinner) Some of the guys there had seen my results and they actually announced it to everyone. The thing is, it turned out that I got the maximum score (whoopee! :D) I didn't even know how much the maximum score was. I really don't understand the scoring system...I found this on Wikipedia:
The final [...] score ranges between 310 and 677 and is based on three subscores: Listening (31–68), Structure (31–68), and Reading (31–67).
So I got maximum for each section (the marks for each section were given as well), but how do they get those marks? Those aren't the number of questions in the paper. If anyone knows, please enlighten me...

In fact we have to get 550 in INSA, otherwise we have to take the test again next year...since I was sure I would get the required result, I just aimed for the best score I could get, and oh yeah, it worked :D So I'm happy!

Now I'm waiting for the TCF(French test)'s results...in this case we have to get 495 out of 699 (why on earth can't they use round numbers for these tests?) for the objective part and 14 out of 20 for the written part. Well, we'll see...

Se transformer en croquette étant assez difficile à réaliser, le parasite est parti chercher sa survie du côté des rats, autre composante du régime des félins.
Les oeufs des parasites, libérés dans la nature au travers des excréments de nos petits animaux de compagnie, sont ensuite ingérés accidentellement par les rats. Mais le plus dure reste à faire : faire accepter par le rat l'idée d'aller se faire dévorer par un chat !
Rien de plus facile : une fois à l'intérieur de la bête, le parasite se loge dans les amygdales du rat, zone cérébrale associée aux émotions et à la peur. Le rat devient alors insensible à l'odeur de l'urine du chat (c'est dire la puissance du truc !) et se retrouve ainsi à se promener nonchalamment sur le territoire de son prédateur. Le chat n'a plus qu'à le manger, et le parasite pourra alors se reproduire - au chaud - dans les intestins du repu.
